I gave up my career in Fife Council Housing Benefits & Council Tax in 2001 to study for a National Certificate in Animal Care at Elmwood College, Cupar, Fife which covered: Anatomy & Physiology / Animal Behaviour / Animal Health & Nutrition / Animal Reproduction / Diseases / Dog Training & Grooming / Equine Care & Nutrition / First Aid / Genetics / Legislation & Welfare / Management & Maintenance of Animal Boarding Establishments / Pet & Animal Husbandry / Records & Accounts / Sale of Livestock
I knew I wanted to work with animals in some aspect but didn’t have a clue what to do. Vet/Vet Nurse - I faint at the sight of blood ! SSPCA - I’d be up on assault charges within a month ! Kennel Hand/Owner - tried and tested, not for me Guide Dog Puppy Walker - I couldn’t bear the thought of having a dog for a year then handing it over Foster Carer - well if you look at the picture at the top of the page you can see I’m hopeless Rescue Animals - well enough said (see above) Pet Shop - I did a work placement in Kirkcaldy for two weeks and loved every minute
In August 2003 I approached Business Gateway who opened a business bank account for me with £250.00. I asked a friend of mine who was an established pet retailer some advice about buying stock. I took a trip to the cash n carry and was I in for a shock, how very little you get for your money! So I now had a very small amount of stock and a couple of decorating tables. I attended markets and eventually bought a stall. As my stock grew I bought a bigger stall, then a bigger one, then a bigger one, then a bigger one again until I had so much stock that I was spending more time setting it up and putting it away than anything else. I decided to look for premises. I opened the shop in Grangemouth at the beginning of February 2005. The biggest mistake I ever made! I really missed the laughs and the banter from the markets with the other traders and the customers, don’t get me wrong I got to know a lot of my regulars from the shop and had good laughs, but it’s just not the same staring at the same four walls for five years!
The one thing that has shocked me the most over the years though is that most pet retailers are very bitchy and would stab you in the back as quick as look at you. They see all competition as the enemy! I am on friendly terms with only two companies which is sad really as businesses should be helping each other out. If I am not in a position to help a customer I will pass them in the direction of someone who can, that’s how it should be!
I gave the shop up when my lease ran out at the end of January 2010. I now concentrate on my home deliveries as my time is much more flexible.
