I gave up my career in Fife Council Housing Benefits & Council Tax in 2001 to follow my dream. I studied for a National Certificate in Animal Care at Elmwood College which covered pet & animal husbandry - legislation & welfare - dog training & grooming - animal behaviour - animal health & nutrition - animal reproduction - genetics - anatomy & physiology - diseases - management & maintenance of animal boarding establishments - sale of livestock - records & accounts - first aid - equine care & nutrition. I started the business 26th August 2003
The advice I give to my customers is a mixture of training, veterinary advice, personal experience, customer feedback and general common sense. I have not been trained by a manufacturer to give the hard sell on one product, I give unbiased advice and it will vary from customer to customer as circumstances differ

Too infrequent feeding can lead to a very slow metabolic rate that encourages food to be laid down as fat rather than being used for energy immediately. It can also cause the irritation of the esophagus by stomach acid, and appears to be associated with gastric dilitation and volvulus (canine bloat). Feeding two or more smaller meals is better, one hour before or after exercise
The feeding chart on pet food packaging is to be used as an estimation only
Working dogs and those with high activity levels require more calories for energy than those leading a less active life-style
Stressed animals burn off more calories than relaxed ones
Every animal is an individual with his or her own speed of metabolism; this means that 2 dogs of the same age, breed and weight could have different daily calorie requirements
Monitor your dogs weight, condition & stools very closely, adjust amounts to suit individual animal
You should be able to feel but not see their ribs, and they should have a visible waist when you look down at them
If your dog does not eat their food within 5-6 minutes, lift it and put it away until the next meal time, repeat this procedure with every meal, no treats or titbits until they learn. Result = Reward
A huge percentage of people say they have tried every food in the supermarket and their pet won’t eat it. Foods generally stocked in a supermarket or chain store will contain cheap bulking ingredients and very little meat content which will not be very tasty, plus supermarket staff are only trained to show you where things are, take your money and pack your bags, they don’t have the slightest clue about pet nutrition
Always remember that dog food is not just dog food, it’s very much like feeding yourself. If you walk into a supermarket you have two choices, their own make or whatever commercial makes they choose to stock. What if you don’t like any of them. Do you instead choose to buy from specialist shops i.e fishmongers/butchers/bakers because their products are of better tasting quality. Shopping for dog food is the very same, most dogs prefer a hypoallergenic diet as it is obviously much tastier & nutritionally satisfying, you will not find these foods in a supermarket
Every dog will react differently to various brands / flavours. The same flavour in different brands are completely different mixes depending on the ingredients, so just because the dog turns it’s nose up at say ‘lamb’ does not mean that they dislike that flavour, this just means that they don’t find that particular mix appetising. If they are slightly loose with one flavour try the others as this does not mean that they will be the same with all flavours of that brand, some protein sources just don’t agree with certain dogs
Depending on which food you currently feed, hypoallergenic foods are more expensive because the ingredients are far superior to that of other foods, they will also last longer as you can cut the daily amount fed by up to 20% as it is much more nutritious. This change over could give you a happier, healthier pet & save you a fortune

ARDEN GRANGE
nutrition without compromise
hypoallergenic wholesome, natural ingredients
Arden grange ia a British owned, independent, family run business based just outside Brighton, which has been producing Super Premium pet foods since 1996. The owners are renowned for their experience and expertise in the dog world, and have been breeding and showing their highly acclaimed Ardenburg German Shepherds for over 30 years.
When Arden Grange was launched it was the first product of its kind to be able to name human-grade fresh chicken as its primary ingredient. Since then we have been building on our knowledge and experience developing nutritionally superior dog and cat foods. They are formulated to very high standards and attention is paid to the proportions and diversity of sources of the nutrients, so they provide optimum nutrition for your cat or dog.
Arden Grange provides the very best nutrition, ensuring health and vitality throughout your pet’s lifetime and represents wholesome ingredients, excellent palatability and visible results in the condition of the animal.
Our “Not Tested on Animals Guarantee” logo, which you will find on all our packaging and literature, demonstrates our commitment to the welfare of animals. We have not and never will fund any invasive research projects conducted in relation to the development or refinment of pet foods manufactured or sold by our company. Nor would we be party to any act that could be deemed harmful or injurious to animals.
As with humans, a poor diet can leave your dog feeling tired and run-down, prone to infections and ailments. Arden Grange foods contain a unique blend of ingredients, provided by leading nutritionists, that ensure your dog is always ready for work and play.
A standard diet contains about 15 nutrients, whilst “premium” diets are formulated with approximately 50. Arden Grange diets are truly super-premium. The range also contains added prebiotics MOS and FOS, which promote the growth of friendly gut bacteria that in turn reduce the build up of harmful bowel flora.
Some nutrient levels are reduced by the cooking processes used in the manufacture of pet foods. These losses have duly been calculated, with additional volumes added prior to extrusion to account for them. The typical analysis and ingredients listings are therefore a true representation of the percentages of nutrients present in the diet.
Additionally, all Arden Grange complete dry foods are free from wheat, beef, soya and dairy products. All Arden Grange products are free from Artificial Colours, Flavours or Preservatives and are naturally preserved using mixed tocopherals, vitamin E & rosemary extract.
None of our ingredients are genetically modified and none of our recipes include Menadione (vitamin K3).
Arden Grange are renowned for producing not only super premium quality, highly digestible pet foods, but also extremely palatable ones!
At Arden Grange, we know that good nutrition is vitally important, but this has little meaning if your pet refuses to eat the diet that you have chosen! This is why our dog & cat kibbles are specially designed to ensure maximum palatability, and all of our recipes are taste-tested by our own pets in non-evasive trials so that we can offer the assurance that our super-premium kibble dog & cat food will be enjoyed!
Our kibbles are “friendly” because we have taken into account all of the following:
Texture - Texture is important to cats & dogs. Puppies and smaller dogs prefer smooth kibbles. Cats are deterred by rough textures.
Density - The correct density of the kibble ensures that it is satisfactorily crunchy when fed dry, but easily soaked for those pets preferring a moist diet.
Size - The kibbles are of an appropriate size and shape for the species and age group at which they are marketed.
Taste Preference - Our kibbles are coated with a delicious natural coating that is free from any added salts or sugars.
Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids in correct ratios to promote good skin and coat condition
With nucleotides to aid digestion; balanced minerals and added cranberry extract to help maintain urinary tract health
With antioxidants and vitamins to enhance the affectiveness of the immune system
Powerful natural antioxidants to help support dental hygene
Added Glucosamine, Chondroitin & MSM to promote and maintain joint health
The inclusion of these extra ingredients in the Arden Grange product ranges, incorporates the current knowledge and understanding concerning the prevention of metabolic and age-related conditions, such as cancer, heart disease and the maintenance of healthy joints and good skin and coat condition. It is well established and documented that the advantages to be gained by cats & dogs, by including these nutrients within their diet, are highly beneficial to every age, size and breed of animal.
